Toon Lagoon is right between two popular areas of Islands of Adventure, Marvel Super Hero Island and Skull Island. The whole area is themed around newspaper comic strips from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Do these characters mean anything to the kids (or even 20-year-olds) attending the parks? Broom Hilda? Flash Gordon? Cathy?
There are two great water rides in the area, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls and Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, but there’s not much else to do in this land. There are a couple of stores and a handful of dining options; Wimpy’s has never been open any of the times I’ve been there, and Blondies’s only half of the time.
What if they revamped this area with more popular characters that Universal already has access to and are currently present in the parks?
- SpongeBob: Turn the area into Bikini Bottom. Who wouldn’t want to try a Krusty Krab burger?
- Scooby-Doo (suggested in the comments of the video above): A haunted house? A Scooby-Snack stand?
- Trolls (also suggested by a viewer): A stage show/sing along to the popular soundtrack.
In response to our video, Naty from the Universal Eye YouTube channel offered this thoughtful counterpoint, and I appreciate her perspective:
